Description
Summary:This article calls for the re-conception of what has historically been a monocultural approach to community development as a field of practice and subject of study. It explores some elements of multicultural community development in the face of the ongoing redistribution of racial and ethnic populations in metropolitan areas. While community development assumes that community is a unit of solution, as the social characteristics of community members change, community itself can become a contested concept raising problems for practitioners and theorists alike. The article identifies the range of skills, knowledge, values, and approaches that would be appropriate when combining difference with unity.
