Description
Summary:Curing of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites is a critical step in achieving higher strength and it is one of the time consuming process. Among several alternative curing methods infrared radiation curing is one of the viable method of curing the FRP composites. In this study, an innovative method of infrared processing of polymer composites is discussed. Infrared curing system for processing of FRP composites from conceptual stage to final development is explained and the final specifications have been derived. The process parameters, their importance and the cure schedule are chosen for establishing the efficacy of the process. Laminates prepared by thermal (conventional) and infrared cure methods are compared for two different hardeners with epoxy resin as matrix reinforced with glass fibers systems, optimized cure process schedule is developed based on their strength and degree of cure. The infrared curing process developed will help the industries in reducing the lead time in the curing and considerable saving in the cost without compromising the strength of the FRP composite.
