Summary: | Independent monitoring and evaluation of public health policies is needed whether voluntary or legislative action is taken and is fully supported by the food manufacturing industry. The results of the national diet and nutrition survey show the effectiveness of the voluntary removal of artificial TFAs. 2 Average TFA intakes (natural and artificial) were less than 2 g per day for all age groups (0.7-0.9% of food energy)-well below the maximum UK and World Health Organization recommendations. 3 4 The Department of Health has suggested that most TFAs consumed come from natural sources rather than artificial ones as a result of the efforts of the food industry. |
