Summary: | Formation of ferroelectric BaBi2Ta2O9 by annealing of an amorphous precursor prepared by high energy ball milling was studied using XRD, SEM, Raman IR, diffuse reflectivity and dielectric measurements. Formation of Bi-layered BaBi2Ta2O9 proceeds via an intermediate fluorite phase. Mechanochemical activation enabled BaBi2Ta2O9 to be obtained after a shorter time and at much lower temperatures than those required in a conventional solid state reactions. The lateral size of the plate-like crystallites was about 100-200 nm and properties of the synthesised particles were different compared to the bulk material. |
