Summary: | Much of this is based on the fun factor, but a few location-based, social networking sites such as foursquare and Gowalla can actually tap into users' GPS-enabled smartphones and let users "check in" to a location. If users accumulate enough check-ins via these sites, they can proudly call themselves mayor of their specific spots. In a recent report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, titled "4% of Online Americans Use Location-Based Services," authors Kathryn Zickuhr and Aaron Smith outlined exactly who is using these services and how. The report found that 4% of adults online use a location-based service. The survey also included findings on the discrepancies among different demographics, specifically gender and race/ethnicity. |
