Description
Summary:Essay in a symposium on the development of women's and gender studies in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. This article is a reflection on the process of introducing gender studies in Bulgarian institutions of higher learning, both in terms of curriculum transformation and teaching. It traces the history of the discipline from its initial stages in the early 1990s to the end of the 2010s. In addition, it discusses the two major strategies that have been adopted in the Bulgarian context, more precisely, the pros and cons of teaching gender studies as a separate program as well as integrating it into already established traditional disciplines. The analysis looks both backward and forward: to some of the successful practices of gendering the academia in the past twenty years, but also to the stumbling blocks in the development of gender studies as a fully fledged discipline in the future.
