Description
Summary:Soil organic carbon (C) dynamics have been used to assess sustainable land managements in forest ecosystems. Impact, defined as intensive forms of land use that affect the soil function, can change C quantity and quality in soils, leading to a progressive degradation of the ecosystems. Soil CO 2 effluxes were studied in five transects located at the Fort Benning military reservation in west-central Georgia, USA. Transects were located in upland and bottomland sites with low, moderate, and high level of disturbance due to military training. Water-extractable C, microbial biomass C, and total C and N were measured at each point along the transects. Soil CO 2 effluxes were strongly related to the level of disturbance. Low-impact sites exhibited higher CO 2 efflux compared to high-impact areas. Similarly, total C, total N, microbial biomass C and labile C were also affected by the intensity of military training. Soil C parameters were significantly and positively correlated to CO 2 efflux. Results indicated that parameters related to soil C dynamics such as CO 2 efflux can be potentially used as indicators of the impacts of military training in forest ecosystems.
