Contribution to the knowledge of the Demospongiae (Porifera) fauna of Turkey
Studies on Demospongiae diversity on the Aegean and Mediterranean coast of Turkey are scarce. Yazici (1978) identified 15 species around the islands Goekceada and Bozcaada in the Canakkale area, and Ergueven et al. (1988) (in: Topaloglu 2001) 34 species around Goekceada. Topaloglu (2001) found 13 sp...

Summary: | Studies on Demospongiae diversity on the Aegean and Mediterranean coast of Turkey are scarce. Yazici (1978) identified 15 species around the islands Goekceada and Bozcaada in the Canakkale area, and Ergueven et al. (1988) (in: Topaloglu 2001) 34 species around Goekceada. Topaloglu (2001) found 13 species around Goekceada. Cinar et al. (2002) report Sarcotragus muscarum Schmidt, 1864 from the Aegean Sea. Okus et al. (2004) identified 25 species in 16 genera in the Goekova, Datca-Bozburun Marine Protected Area. All studies on sponges in Turkey were carried out in coastal areas, which may explain the low number of species recorded so far. Kefalas et al. (2003) and Voultsiadou (2005a, 2005b), for example, have identified 200 sponge species living in the Greek Aegean Sea. |
