Summary:The article discusses the development of sociology in India during the twentieth century. The contribution of Radhakamal Mukerjee is discussed in particular. Mukerjee's academic career and intellectual development through his various works are detailed, with a focus on how Mukerjee's movement toward sociology grew out of dissatisfaction with some elements of economics. The article concludes with a discussion of some of Mukerjee's contemporaries who also are credited with developing sociology in India. These include D. P. Mukerji, G. S.
