Description
Summary:This article examines a direct-reduction method of steelmaking that employs a single-stage cycle and a universal batch-operated arc furnace developed by the authors. First, the reducing operation is carried out in the furnace with the electrodes submerged in the charge. After the charge has melted and slag has been removed through an opening in the upper part of the furnace, the electrodes are raised and the switch on the transformer is changed to the electrical regime in which refining and alloying are carried out. The finished steel is tapped through an opening in the lower part of the furnace at the completion of the process.
