Summary: | We present a simplified quantitative description of the effective refractive index of the cladding region in holey fibers. Our approximation is based on a smooth interpolation between two limiting cases. It reproduces the results of extensive numerical calculations to remarkable precision and may often make such calculations unnecessary. We test our description on several different geometries involving common ones, but also a rather exotic fractal cladding structure. |
