Description
Summary:The state of understanding of the physical, chemical and biological processes affecting organic contaminants in groundwater zones is reviewed with particular reference to horizontal flow in sand and gravel aquifers. Although a better understanding of the principles involved had greatly improved models able to simulate and predict the movements of some contaminants, a more detailed knowledge of the processes controlling the fate and transport of contaminants was needed. The long time lags characterizing contaminant transport and their effects resulted in difficulties in assessing potential health problems. Thirty-three references are included.
