Summary:This article provides an interim report on the progress of the Thread Count Automation Project (TCAP), which began at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, in 2007. The project's aim is to determine thread density from X-radiographs of paintings on canvas with the help of computers, focusing on the paintings of the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), almost half of whose works on canvas have now been subject to analysis (approximately 380 canvases). The authors describe the challenges involved in interpreting the data derived from the canvas rolls used by Van Gogh and summarise what has been gained in art historical terms from the material assembled so far, including new information on the artist's working practices and discoveries relating to the dating, locations, and sequence of the paintings.
