Summary: | FAST FADE: [David Puttnam], Columbia Pictures, and the Battle for Hollywood. By [Andrew Yule]. (Delacorte, $19.95.) Intensely ambitious and devoted to quality, David Puttnam, the British producer, attracted attention in the early 1980's with such films as ''Local Hero,'' ''Chariots of Fire'' and ''The Killing Fields.'' Success led Mr. Puttnam to become head of a major studio, Columbia Pictures, even though Hollywood and its mindless ''product'' represented everything he purported to detest. After a series of incautious pronouncements, Mr. Puttnam quickly alienated most of the prestigious agents, producers and movie stars he had to deal with. |
