Summary:On Sep 4, 2012, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published the second installment of its "meaningful use" regulations. These regulations detail the objectives and measures that providers must satisfy to qualify for electronic health record (EHR) incentive payments under Stage 2 of the EHR incentive programs. The Stage 2 regulations also include several important changes to other aspects of the incentive programs, including the Stage 1 meaningful use requirements. This article provides an overview of the EHR incentive programs and describes several key aspects of the Stage 2 meaningful use regulations and their implications for providers. The release of the Stage 2 regulations gives providers a clear roadmap of what objectives and measures they will need to satisfy in the upcoming years to qualify for EHR incentive payments. In particular, providers should take advantage of both the delay in the onset of the Stage 2 meaningful use requirements and the shortened reporting period in 2014 to evaluate their current EHR implementation and incentive payment strategies to ensure that they can meet the Stage 2 requirements.
