Description
Summary:Anaerobic digesters, traditionally found in municipal wastewater treatment plants, are now being widely constructed for farm, industrial and source separated organics applications. The demand for these applications is being driven by the importance of diverting high-strength organic wastes from traditional disposal routes in order to extract the organic and energy values in the waste materials. This article addresses some of the challenges and solutions that can assist operators in successful implementation of codigestion projects. Operation of a digester with multiple substrates presents some unique challenges. It is important to recognize these challenges from the onset. The foremost of these is the potential for foam formation. Foam management begins with the start-up procedure used as each new substrate is added. Start-up is a time of transition, and transitions are the most critical periods for foam formation that can generate gas holdup.
