Description
Summary:The Bureau of Economic Analysis has just released preliminary results from the 2011 Annual Survey of US Direct Investment Abroad. The statistics collected on this survey cover the worldwide operations of US multinational companies (MNC). The survey collects data on the finance and operations of US MNCs, including balance sheet and income statement details, employment and employee compensation, sales, capital expenditures, trade in goods, and expenditures for research and development. The worldwide operations of a US MNC can be split between its domestic operations, represented by the US parent company, and its foreign operations, represented by foreign affiliates. Employment by US MNCs increased 1.6% to 34.7 million workers in 2011 after increasing 1.1% in 2010. The increase reflected a 0.4% increase in the employment of US parents and a 4.2% increase in the employment of majority-owned foreign affiliates. US parents accounted for one-fifth of total US private industry employment in 2011.
