Summary:Atrial fibrillation and venous thromboembolism are prevalent, complex diseases that increase morbidity and mortality while reducing patients' quality of life. There has been a dramatic increase in anticoagulant choices available to prevent and treat thrombosis and prevent related complications. Pharmacists play an important role in the prevention and management of thrombosis and can help to ensure the safe and effective use of evidence-based therapies to optimize outcomes. This article provides a review of the clinical features of each of the main drug classes used orally to treat thrombosis, including information on adverse events, monitoring, and drug-drug interactions.
