Summary: | Sixteen thousand -- that's the number of students who have participated in an Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition (AVTC) in the past 25 years. The US Department of Energy (DOE) began sponsoring AVTCs in 1988 and, since then, nearly 100 North American universities have participated in what has become a premier collegiate automotive engineering competition series. What's more, 75% of AVTC students have entered into careers with automakers, suppliers and other major automotive companies. And 30% of the engineers General Motors has hired from AVTCs have submitted patents through GM's intellectual property process, which is a higher rate than the automakers entire engineering team has generated. Run by Argonne National Laboratory, a DOE facility, they're now moving into EcoCAR 3 with a new batch of schools and students. A competition event at the end of academic Year One will bring all student teams together to assess each team's design process component selection and vehicle configuration. |
