Summary: | With all of the media attention currently focused on Millennial consumers, over the past several months the author has come across several discussions addressing the emerging phenomenon of "delayed adulthood." As they will do, journalists have coined a number of irreverent terms -- including Kidults and Twixters -- to describe this emerging social demographic of young individuals who ostensibly "just won't grow up." People are quick to point out the primary cause as the sluggish US economy. But there are also other contributing factors that people shouldn't overlook. Overall social values have changed making it much more acceptable and less stigmatizing to live at home with ones parents longer, to get married later, and so on. And there is fascinating biological evidence that adolescence now is extended to around age 25 because actual neurological changes are still occurring. |
