description | Substance abuse prevention can improve community health, but there is a large gap between the positive outcomes achieved by preventive sciences and those sometimes observed in practice. To facilitate involvement by community members in research to address this gap, the researchers developed a prevention process and corresponding technical assistance package for substance abuse prevention coalitions called Getting To Outcomes (GTO). After seven months, 48 persons in two community coalitions have been trained in the GTO process. Results showed that GTO helped those coalitions to better plan, implement, and evaluate prevention programs; that these gains were related to greater use of GTO; and that GTO helped the coalitions demonstrate positive outcomes. |
