Summary: | The FCC recently extended the construction deadline of 5 kHz land mobile radio on the 220 MHz band. The extension request was necessitated by several factors, including: 1. Many licensees were unable to gain access to their own transmitter sites. 2. The Commission's recent decision in the "Regulatory Parity" docket, which resulted in reclassifying 220 MHz systems as Commercial Mobile Radio, has caused licensees to question how the new rules will affect their operations. 3. Some of the system operators attempting to create networks with 220 MHz systems are unfamiliar with dispatch radio and Part 90 rules in general. The regulatory uncertainty delayed the ordering of equipment by a number of operators. As a result, as the construction deadline approached, manufacturers were swamped with equipment orders, creating a backlog and reduced ability for manufacturers to deliver in time for construction for the April 4, 1995, deadline. |
