Description
Summary:A survey of wireless communications service technicians conducted by Communications magazine provides a fairly representational look at the communications industry in the US. Three percent of the respondents are bench technicians exclusively, 3% are field technicians, and 26% have both bench and field technician responsibilities. The largest percentage of respondents (34%) received their education from vocational-technical schools, while 13% received their training in the military, and 14% were college graduates in an electronics field. The survey shows that 40% of respondents make from $35,000 to $50,000 per year, while 22% make less than $25,000 per year. The majority of respondents report that there is a shortage of qualified personnel. Forty-nine percent of the total respondents feel they can advance in their present jobs, as compared to 34%, excluding shop owners, who think they are in dead-end jobs. Most technicians think that they are barely keeping up with new technology.
