Description
Summary:To clean up the mess left by Communist mismanagement, the media in Poland had to move swiftly to a market system and private ownership. As a result of these changes, the official press and the underground press have had to merge into one. The first uncertainty this new press has had to face has been from the increase in paper prices. Free competition has been limited by constraints imposed by the ossified state-owned sectors, such as the printing plants. In addition, with demonopolization, Poland suffered a shortage of journalists who could write for the changing times. The real test unfolding before the press has been the expansion of an advertising market that used to be financially insignificant. Newspapers with high circulation, high costs, and high prices are doing well, as are those with high circulations and low costs.
