A well-prepared crisis-communications plan will help a company remain organized when facing a potential disaster. A successful crisis-communications plan will be updated periodically. The effectiveness of crisis-communications plans are enhanced by conducting practice drills, maintaining community relations, establishing formal communication channels among employees and the community, conducting site-specific training and education for local emergency-response crews, clarifying the role of various company officials during crisis response, and estbalishing a database of operations and environmental information for the facility. Federal, state and local regulations should be reviewed for specifications regarding emergency response communications or operations.
