Summary: | Last month community banks held a highly successful Government Affairs Conference where they outlined America's Community Bankers' action priorities for 2007. The priorities include regulatory burden relief, credit union taxation and regulation, data security, GSE reform, Federal Home Loan Bank System, Basel capital standards, mortgage lending practices, and insurance affordability. All the pressures of doing business today make regulatory burden relief that much more important. TJX's data breach has proven again that community banks pay the price for a retailer's failure to protect the customer. GSE regulatory reform legislation has a good chance of passing the House, but faces greater challenges in the Senate. The comment period closed on the Basel capital proposal. This is a critically important issue involving both Basel II and Basel IA. |
