Summary: | Implementing electronic media claims (EMC) filing has proved to be difficult. National Electronic Information Corp. (NEIC), however, had promised to bring uniformity to billing. Some have been unhappy with NEIC's progress and the extent of its implementation. NEIC first oversimplified the task and then encountered problems with carriers. Some carriers were receiving claims electronically, printing them on paper, and rekeying them. This entered a number of errors into the systems. Some claims just disappeared and had to be resubmitted on paper. Still, EMC can be justified because of the tremendous amount of paper it can eliminate and the labor costs it can save in shuffling that paper. The inclusion of text processing would be one major step of progress. Another potential for EMC processing is to complete the loop and remit payment through the national banking system. EMC use would widen if the same information that is required on the paper claims was required on electronic claims. |
