Description
Summary:As hospitals move through the 1990s, the relationship of administrative staff and physicians is changing. At the same time, healthcare financial managers have seen profitability decline due to greater competition and the changing requirements of 3rd-party payers. Healthcare financial managers must shift their focus from reimbursement to prospective payment and must accompany that shift with a change from retrospective reporting to proactive analysis, information sharing, and exchange. Behavioral changes must take place in 3 areas: 1. the healthcare financial management profession, 2. the financial management education system, and 3. healthcare organizations themselves. As the demand for resources in the healthcare industry continues to increase and as competition intensifies, the role that accounting plays in the industry will continue to change.
