Description
Summary:What the smart card can offer in abundance is security. But as networks converge and data speeds grow ever faster, the smart card must evolve or it will be left out in the cold. Developers are seeking to give smart cards the same kind of protocols and interfaces as PCs and mobile phones. That would allow smart cards to communicate seamlessly with these devices and enable a large pool of developers to write applications for them. Governments are issuing the first passports equipped with contactless chips storing biometrics. Contactless chips are also finding their way into mobile phones, mainly for payment and ticketing. But before Axalto or other card vendors ship the first Internet-friendly, high-speed smart cards, they need customers. The first promising market segment emerging is not Web service providers on the fixed Internet but mobile network operators. All the major vendors are proposing mega-memory cards that make use of the highspeed interfaces that standards makers have yet to adopt.
