Summary: | The Asian Development Bank's May governors meeting included sessions where bankers spoke candidly about the problems faced by the region's financial sector. In what became something of an exercise in self-flagellation, Asia's leading bankers gathered in the northern Thai city of Chiange Mai last month to thrash out what had gone wrong in the past 3 years. The general feeling among delegates, especially the commercial bankers, was that Asia is not out of the woods yet. Yes, there are some signs of recovery, but for the local banks, the challenges of the next few years should not be underestimated. |
