Summary:In an interview, Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad discusses his country's achievements and his refusal to bow to the prescriptions of the developed world. Obviously Malaysia has made much faster progress in the past 22 years. That was the strategy adopted by the government. Not much has changed in terms of direction or policies. Only a speeding-up of the process. People believed that Mohamad would be grossly unfair to others and that he would only promote Malay interests. But over the years the Chinese and Indians have come to trust him and to believe in the need to live in harmony and the need to cooperate to strive for peace and stability and consequently success. By and large a country should be allowed to run its own economic affairs and financial affairs. There shouldn't be pressure from outside.
