Description
Summary:Since 1976, the Sterling Co. Evans Library of Texas A&M University has had online searching, and since 1982, it has offered one no charge search per year to any graduate student actively working on a proposal, thesis, dissertation, or record of study. In 1986, the library installed its Wiley Laser Disk Service, which includes 23 databases on compact or optical disk. Four databases are used as the basis for comparisons to online searching, and 16 months are selected for review, representing at least 2 months prior to the installation of the first laserdisk database through the 1987 calendar year. The number of online users for each database decreased after the installation of the laserdisk product. Faculty and staff make up the heaviest users of the mediated searching service. Undergraduates make up a substantial portion of the population of CD-ROM (compact disk/read-only memory) database users. CD-ROM users do not have to be concerned with fees for online connect time, which makes it an excellent environment for learning the techniques of computerized literature searching.
