Summary: | America's relations with Vietnam have never been less than rocky. It's been 45 years since the United States first gave aid to South Vietnam. Since then, the shared history of the two countries contains chapter after muddled chapter. In an effort to put the last half-century to rest, President Clinton announced on July 11 that full diplomatic relations with Vietnam would be re-established. The announcement sparked anger among those who felt the pain of old wounds. Most opposition came on the grounds that Vietnam has not disclosed enough information about missing American soldiers. Such feelings are an extension of the sentiments expressed in February 1994 when the United States lifted its 19-year trade embargo on Vietnam. (excerpt) |
