Summary: | It is more important than ever for people nearing retirement to focus on the adequacy of their health insurance coverage. Corporations traditionally have offered comprehensive health care benefits to their employees, but the soaring cost of health care has caused them to reevaluate the nature and extent of the benefits provided to employees under company-sponsored plans. The health care burden has started to shift more to the individual. Financial planners should help clients understand the limitations of the various insurance programs and make sure that they maximize clients' coverage. Medicare still does not provide coverage for custodial care, a prime concern of many older people. Medigap, or supplemental, health care policies are meant to cover expenses not provided for by Medicare. Long-term health care insurance can protect against the prohibitive cost of prolonged stays in nursing homes. |
