Summary: | this year's ALTA Airline Leaders Forum was the first for new executive director Luis Felipe de Oliveira. Some of the key talking points, however, were far from new: specifically, how infrastructure constraints, an unhelpful cocktail of regulations and government failure to appreciate the advantages of aviation are frustrating growth ambitions for the region's carriers. These frustrations came amid a relatively positive mood for the airline industry in Latin America, during a year of financial improvements and signs of the region's biggest economy, Brazil, making a tentative comeback. Speaking to FlightGlobal, de Oliveira -- who took up the executive director post in October -- made it clear that he appreciated the infrastructure and regulatory challenges he needed to focus on as leader of the Latin American and Caribbean airline association. We see most of the airports in the region are very congested and [the increasing number of airlines] makes them even more congested -- we see low-cost airlines growing, increasing the number of passengers, increasing the number of movements. |
