Description
Summary:The nations located along the Asian rim of the Pacific Basin offer the most lucrative and secure regional markets for US export. Trade and defense are defining the shape for the entire range of issues in the relationship between the US and Japan. Japan is still America's largest overseas trading partner, but export sales opportunities for US suppliers are mixed and appear against a background of declining US market share created by Japan's increased oil costs for 1980. US imports to Australia are increasing, largely due to the demand generated by development projects related to the country's resource boom. This growth is dominated by capital equipment, an area in which the US is highly competitive. Korea's economic activity is increasing, and this should brighten prospects for sales of a wide range of US products. US companies are likely to find rapidly expanding prospects in Hong Kong. Because it is increasing its capital, technology, and knowledge-intensive industries, Singapore will increase its imports from the US by 35% this year. US imports to the Philippines, New Zealand, and Thailand are up.
