Summary:The Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act's security standards introduce several new terms not included in the privacy standards. While some terms are routinely used outside HIPAA, their definitions in the context of HIPAA are unique. The basic rule of the security standards is that a covered entity must implement security measures that ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic protected health information (PHI) that it creates, receives, maintains, or transmits.
