Summary: | The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that surrounds a part of the urethra just below the bladder, being contiguous with the neck of the bladder. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer are 2 separate clinical conditions that commonly occur in men, with prevalence increasing as age advances. Both conditions are associated with a proliferation of cells in the prostate. Both require androgens for growth and development and both may respond to androgen deprivation treatment. Treatments available include watchful waiting, pharmacologic intervention, surgical treatment and other procedures. Prostate cancer and treatment strategies for prostate cancer also are discussed. |
