Summary: | While cold weather can aggravate some wastewater treatment systems, the freezing/crystallization process can be exploited to purify water. Sludge freezing bed technology, which uses crystallizing purification and dewatering to remove impurities, was developed by USACE for cold regions. The sludge freezing bed process, operation, and effectiveness are described. One freezing bed constructed at Fort McCoy, WI, removed 94% of the water from anaerobically digested sludge, saving $450 per cleaning for each of 14 drying beds. One manufacturer of snow making equipment is using wastewater effluent treated in a freezing bed to make snow, which can be stored in piles that melt slowly in spring and summer. The benefits of this Snowfluent process are listed. |
