Summary: | We boarded a bus and were taken to Arlington Cemetery for the ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns. [Bob Smith] and I were among the few able to watch President [Bill Clinto] place a wreath of red, white, and blue flowers at the Tomb as others inside the amphitheater waited for his arrival on the stage. We then proceeded to our seats in the amphitheater at the solemn 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month-when World War I ended. What followed was a beautiful musical selection by the United States Navy Band, the procession of colors, and a prayer for veterans by Chaplain Jeni Cook, director of the VA Chaplain Service. George Duggins, National President of Vietnam Veterans of America, the hosting organization for this year's event, led the gathering in the pledge of allegiance and gave welcoming remarks. Acting Secretary of Veterans Affairs Hershel Gober then introduced President Clinton as the guest speaker. |
