Description
Summary:Pattern can be identified in many forms. Mathematicians appreciate pattern and its ability to describe, to explain, to determine, to create a sense of security--"I can see a pattern...", and pattern is part of the sense making process for learners, from a very early age. Number squares exhibit a multiplicity of patterns that may vary according to the person "observing" arrays of numbers. How often do we plan tasks and activities to develop the observational skills of learners?--A skill that is a prerequisite to pattern spotting. Here there are tasks and activities that you might choose to use in your classroom tomorrow. When did you last appreciate the potential of a 5 x 5 number square? Seeing a pattern is just the beginning. (Contains 17 figures and 1 footnote.)
