Summary: | Franz Beckenbauer remembers when the idea of security at the World Cup meant remembering to watch your wallet in the local pub. But the German soccer legend has no illusions about the task facing his country's police, military and civil authorities when more than 1 million visitors descend on a dozen cities for the monthlong event that begins Jun 9 in Munich. Beckenbauer and the rest of the World Cup security team now must worry about large-scale terror -- in Hamburg, for instance, where the US team will live and train -- as well as civil disturbances sparked by notorious soccer hooligans and even right-wing extremists who have vowed to disrupt the event. Meanwhile, the Germans are getting help from most countries competing in the World Cup. |
