Summary:In 1984, the Missouri Joint Municipal Electric Utility Commission (MJMEUC) retained Burns & McDonnell Engineering to study the feasibility of implementing an MJMEUC-administered load-control area. An electronic remote metering system (RMS) was installed to collect load profile data from the members and optimize existing operations at MJMEUC. At present, 13 of the original 20 members joined the RMS and purchased the necessary remote equipment. The RMS is comprised of electronic demand recorders for remote data acquisition and a small central-station computer for data retrieval, storage, and reporting. Currently, MJMEUC personnel upload data from the recorders every 2 weeks and provide the members with detailed data reports at regular intervals. The RMS has proven to be an effective information tool for MJMEUC members. A low-cost, personal computer-based central-station computer, inexpensive remote equipment, and dial-up communications has enabled MJMEUC members to realize some of the benefits of a SCADA system at a small fraction of the costs.
