Summary: | The US government has to be concerned with protecting the best interests of US corporations while simultaneously preventing trade wars with any of the US' trade partners. There is no doubt that US economic policies, compared to those of the rest of the world, caused the trade deficit. The problem is that US investment has increased faster than savings. Current US trade policies are helpful to banks with Third World loans, but the trade deficit is hurting US exporters and manufacturers of importables. It is obvious that other countries must start taking an interest in the US trade problem, because anything that affects the US is certain to affect the rest of the world. The US should continue to compete in the world market, with a heavy emphasis on technology and improved productivity. The US also should reduce government spending by reducing the budget deficit, which will cause an effective dollar devaluation. |
