Summary: | While the two events that gave rise to these descriptions were certainly of major significance, there is a grave danger that we come to see them both as marking a fundamental change in the nature of both the international system and the strategic environment that provides the context for defence planning. Here lies the rationale for nuclear weapons, at least until the Trident system truly does reach its end date towards the middle of the century, by which time further positive developments may have enhanced the stability of great power relations. |
