Summary: | Recently, major advances in broadband communications technologies have driven down the cost of delivering broadband interactive services to residential users. Concurrently, there has been an increasing demand by consumers for multimedia and interactive services. Service providers offering point-to-point services, services without a high simultaneous usage rate, or services sourced from a distance are connected to the access network through a core network. The consensus is that the core network will be made of interconnected ATM switches. The flexibility and service independence of ATM networks allows virtual channels of disparate data types and rates to be aggregated and transported across a common network and common interfaces. |
