Summary: | Department heads have a tremendous influence over the quality of teams' performance. They can lead teams to perform better and achieve more by using self-directed team-building principles. A 3-step self-directed team-building approach is presented that does not involve hiring an outside consultant: 1. Set aside time at the end of a staff meeting to discuss the quality of the interactions during the meeting and the quality and the creativity of the results. 2. Ask everyone in the meeting to rate in writing how well the manager did in a number of key areas, including the extent to which participation in the discussion was equally balanced among all members. 3. Utilize easily available team questionnaires to obtain important information on how the team sees itself and sees the manager in terms of the team's effectiveness to accomplish its goals. It is extremely important that all team members be aware of the goals of self-directed team-building so they can help in the effort. |
