Description
Summary:Both furnish a chronological listing of Shostakovich's works giving-as appropriate-the title, subtitle, key, opus number, date of composition, dedication, designation of movements, orchestration, approximate duration, and the date, location and personnel of first performance. Labels and nicknames that have accrued to his music without his sanction-the indestructible, though nonexistent, subtitle of the Fifth Symphony as "A Soviet Artist's Practical Creative Reply to Justified Criticism," for example-are confined to explanatory notes at the end of entries, where variant translations and conflicts among sources are also outlined.
