Description
Summary:At United Parcel Service, all problems can be traced to a lack of accountability. In its most effective form, accountability is basically an attitude. Accountability is an individual's desire to perform a task in the most expeditious and thorough manner possible. Each manager has to create the environment in which accountability will flourish, so each employee will make a commitment to perform. Before the manager can expect full accountability, 5 conditions must exist. The employee being held accountable must: 1. know what the job is, 2. have the capacity for the job, 3. understand the manager's standards, 4. be granted all authority to do the job, and 5. have an understanding with the boss on how accountability will be demonstrated. Motivation is another key ingredient, but the motivational spark is struck differently in each employee. Managers must talk to employees and let them know the importance of what they do.
