Summary: | The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in August issued a long-awaited proposal to change the existing International Classification of Diseases Version 9 (ICD-9) coding sets with the more flexible and granular ICD-10. The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and other insurers call for a five-year transition. The proposal will impact potentially dozens of information systems in any given hospital and administrators should start taking inventory of their application assets, notes Nelly Leon-Chisen, director of coding and classification at the American Hospital Association. Given the scope of the changes ahead, she suggests that hospitals factor the upgrades into their planning and budget process to lessen the financial blow. |
